Our Baronial Champions earn their positions for a one year term at their respective discipline’s championship. Most of our champions proudly earn the title of being the “Defender” of their discipline at Lord Defender, with the exception of the Bardic and Arts & Sciences champions, who are selected at Embers and Ambrosia. Archery Champion
The Archery Champion of the Barony is the title awarded to the winner of the Archery tournament held during the Lord Defender Event each June. The competition for the Archery Defender was added during the second tournament in August AS XX / 1985. The Archery Defender is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs with all other Champions during all official Court functions. Two of the main requirement for this champion are that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following year’s tournament. The Archery Champion can be identified by the Champion’s bow and quiver and blue archer’s hood, which are carried/worn for the year they serve in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.
Arts & Sciences Champion
The Arts & Sciences Champion of the Barony is the title is awarded to the winner of the Arts & Sciences tournament held during the Embers and Ambrosia event each spring. The competition for the Arts & Sciences Defender was also added during the second tournament in August AS XX / 1985. Two of the main requirements for this champion are that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following year’s tournament. The Arts & Sciences Champion is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs with all other Champions during all official Court functions. The Arts & Sciences Champion wears a baldric and has a staff with a banner, which is carried for the year the person serves in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time, since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.
The Bardic Champion is selected at Embers and Ambrosia. Two of the main requirements for this champion are that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets, and that they be available to conduct the following year’s tournament. The Bardic Champion is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs with all other Champions during all official Court functions. The Bardic Champion wears a baldric and has a staff with a banner, which is carried for the year the person serves in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time, since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.
The Baronial Page is chosen each year during the Lord Defender event. The competition for Baronial Page was also added in August AS XXXV / 2000. The job of the Page is to assist the Baronial Coronets during the year of their office. The Page is chosen from a group of youngsters who compete for the job by following specific instructions and completing specific tasks that reflect jobs they may be called upon to do during their tenure as Page. This competition is open to youngsters age 10 and up since some maturity is required for the job. As with the other Champions, the new Page is chosen in the competition designed by the outgoing Page.
The Lord Defender of the Barony is the Heavy armored combat champion. The title is awarded to the winner of the tournament held during the Lord Defender event. The first Lord Defender Championship Tournament was held in October of AS XVIII / 1984. The tournament has been held annually since then. Two of the main requirement for this champion are that they be willing to swear an Oath of Service to the Coronets and that they be available to conduct the following years tournament. The Lord Defender is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs during all official Court functions with all the other Champions. The Lord Defender can be identified by Champion’s Sword, which they carries for the year they serve in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time since the Defender is in charge of running the tournament to select his successor. A person is able to hold the position a total of three times.
The Shield of the Barony is the title awarded to the winner of the new heavy combat fighters’ tournament held on Saturday of the Embers and Ambrosia Event. The competition for the Shield of the Barony was added in June of AS XXVI / 1991. The first and foremost requirement to compete in this tournament is that the fighters have been fighting for less than three years and have never won another tournament. In addition, the champion must be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets and be available to conduct the following year’s tournament. The Shield of the Barony can be identified by the round shield with the center boss ornamented by the Baronial crossed daffodils, which they carry during the year they holds the position. The position can only be held one year due to the requirement that those who enter can never have won a tournament, and the Shield is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor.
The Rapier Champion of the Barony is the Fencing combat champion. The title is awarded to the winner of the tournament held during the Lord Defender event. The competition for the Rapier Defender was added in June of AS VII / 1992. Two of the main requirements for this champion are that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets, and that they be available to conduct the following year’s tournament. The Rapier Defender is the Baroness’s Champion and stands behind the Baroness’s chair during all official Court functions. The Rapier Champion can be identified by Champion’s Rapier and blue cloak which they carry for the year they serve in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time, since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select his successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.
The Thrown Weapons Champion of the Barony is the title awarded to the winner of the Thrown Weapons tournament held during the Lord Defender event. The competition for Thrown Weapons Champion was added in August AS XXXV / 2000. Two of the main requirements for this champion are that they be willing to swear an Oath of Fealty to the Coronets, and that they be available to conduct the following year’s tournament. The Thrown Weapons Defender is the Barony’s Champion and stands behind the chairs during all official Court functions. The Thrown Weapons Champion can be identified by Champion’s Axe, which is carried for the year they serve in this position. The position can only be held one year at a time, since the Champion is in charge of running the tournament to select their successor. At present there is no limit to the number of times a person can hold this position.
